Almost a month ago I brought Nola, my 1 year old lionhead rabbit, to his vet becuase I noticed his left eye was a little cloudy. His vet sent us to an eye specialist becuase he suspected it as a tumor. The eye vet diagnosed it as a scratch and put him on 4 different medicines. Tropicamide, Tobramycin, dexamethasone, and an oral antibiotic. He was on it for a week and we returned to the vet for a check up. He said it looked better and tumors don't look better becuase of medicine so it wasn't a tumor. That was it....he said continue the medicine for 10 more days. About 5 days later I noticed Nola was eating less and less. I called the eye vet and they told me ';oh no our medicine wouldn't do that to him, you need to confront his normal vet.'; so after setting an appointment for the next day I noticed throughtout the day Nola didn't eat or drink anything and wasn't active at all. My vet took another look and said he was most likely miss diagnosed and was on the medicine for way too long, therefore putting his digestive system chemicals out of whack...ectect. It's now been about 3 weeks since he stopped eating. He used to pick at apples or fruits I'd put in but now we've been force feeding him for about 2 weeks. He started off taking it pretty good, but still lost .7 pounds (thats alot for a rabbit) and then some doctors at A%26amp;M University said to put him on Baytril, so we did. Now, this morning Nola wasn't taking any of the food. He would spit everything out and he feels like he weighs even less. He looks ill and is so frail and thin and my vet is out of ideas. I'm currently looking for a specialist but I'm not having much luck. I'm SO worried and can't even sleep anymore. I don't know what to do. Oh ya, also, he was extremely bad diharrea that has now turned into just pure mucus ';poo';
what could it be? how can I help? what should I do?Need advice/help on very sick rabbit. Long, but please....?
ok no one else asked but is he neutered? with rabbits (and most other animals) if its not used they get cancer. so it could have started off as a scratch but you might have been dealing with 2 diff. things to begin with. also with his poo- is his bottom extremely messy? if so look into wet tail. if not ask your vet about the cancer. and as with people always get a second opinion. dont just go with your one vet find another and ask them. i have 3 i go to to be on the safe side.Need advice/help on very sick rabbit. Long, but please....?
aww poor rabbit
I hope he feels better!
have you been giving him probiotics?They help restore the balance of bacteria in his gut and the vet should have given you some to give him orally with Critical Care food.do you know what the oral antibiotic he got was called?Has he had his teeth checked properly?the roots of the molars sometimes push up into the eye socket and can even puncture the eyeball, causing infection-x rays of his head would tell if anything was wrong.he shouldn't be on Baytril if there is no good reason-it can affect a rabbits digestive system and also reduce their appetite to the point of not eating at all-not what your rabbit needed considering he was already off his food! It sounds like they don't really know what is wrong so are just trying whatever comes to mind in the hope it will work-unfortunately good rabbit vets can be few and far between:( An online rabbit expert who is very experienced with rabbit illnesses may be able to help-you can ask her Dana Krempels here http://www.allexperts.com/el/703-9/Rabbi鈥?/a> unfortunately she's on holiday until the 25th but you can search through her past answers for similar cases. I hope you get somewhere-I know how frustrating it is when you don't have a good rabbit vet and your pet is sick.
I raise rabbits and I have never seen anything like this before. 7 pounds is alot for a rabbit. I would say just feed him his normal food and make sure you give him alot of water.Other then that I don't know.Sorry I wasn't much help.
this is a rabbit treat recipe for sick rabbits only i hope this helps
1/2 Yarrow
1/2 Comfrey
1 Coltsfoot
1 Dandelion
1 Echinacea
Put all foliage into a grinder and ground it until it is in small pieces. If you do not have one, cut it in semi-small pieces with a knife. After you are done, serve.
Note: Coltsfoot is the very useful for rabbits who have coughs and mucous.
