I need advice on how to help my friend??

My best friend (my ex-boyfriend, just giving u history),is going to have to put his dog down on monday. His dog has cancer and they dont have the money to operate on it and she is 12 years old so it would be kinda a waste if shell only live another couple years.Hes so upset about it becuase he raised her and she is his little shadow.Ive already told him its better this way because she is really sick , her stomach is so bloated and she is having a hard time breathing and moving. What can i do to help him ?What can i do to make him not so upset?

Thanks for the help.I need advice on how to help my friend??
Give him this, along with the knowledge that she's given him 12 years of love, laughter, comfort and sweetness. It's time for him to return that love one last time. If she's in that much pain then he has to do what is best for her. So Dear, type in ';The Rainbow Bridge'; and allow him to cry.

Let him know that he can ask the vet to be there, holding her, as she takes her last breath. That will help him and her cope with what they're both going through. Just be there for him and let him know he's doing all he can for her... one last time.

The Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry for his loss and yes, so many of us have been through this same thing. It hurts so much and it's okay for those tears to fall in loving memory of our furbabies. Stay close to him for he'll need you now more than ever. I'm glad I could help you.

Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do. It's a part of the grieving process. He needs to come to terms with this on his own. I know that loosing a dog to cancer is hard, I've lost two that way and it was inopperable cancer just to make it that much harder.

The best you can do is remind him of the 12 wonderful years he had with her and that she wouldn't want him to be sad. It's going to be hard, it always is. Just be there as a shoulder to cry on. Offer to go with him to offer support when the day arrives. Good luck.
If you are in the U.S., call this pet grief hotline. They can give you the most valuable advice about how to support your friend. Encourage your friend to call too. There are many people who want to support him through this.

I did a yahoo search and found many other sites/hotlines/support groups for pet loss. I entered: ';grief support pet hotline';
I feel sorry for your friend %26amp; I know exactly how he feels. Losing our beloved pets are just like losing a two legged family member, and at times even worse. I will post a couple links that may help you providing comfort to your friend. First you can print off this poem %26amp; give it to him. I have had it hanging on my refridgerator for the past 4 years now when I lost my boy to cancer http://rainbowsbridge.com/poem.htm Here is the othe site http://www.ygrr.org/doginfo/death-coping…
apart from what others have already said theres not much anyone else can say except how would he feel about a new puppy? believe it or not it may very well help. it will give him something to focus all the love he felt for his other dog on. and make him laugh and not be lonely while missing his old little friend. some ppl arent willing to go straight to another pet so soon but it really can help.
There is nothing you can do now. Just tell him it is the best for the dog. Afterward, talk about the dog, bring back all the happy memories he had with the dog.

We been through the same situation before. We have a new puppy now. We still thinking about our old dog, but the new puppy also bring us laugh.
I've been through the same thing and honestly theres nothing you can say to make him feel better. You just need to be there for him. It's a very painful thing having to put pets down. No matter how sick they are you always second guess yourself afterwards. If you're close to your pet its like losing a family member. So treat the situation like you would with a person. Maybe go with him when he goes to the vet. Let him know that you're there for him. And then spend lots of time with him. Maybe reminiscing, maybe distracting. Either way, just be there.
just tell him that it it is her time to go. God wanted it this way and it would be wrong to let her suffer. She has lived a good long life and now she wants to go to the big fire hydrant in the sky. Tell that she loved him and she wants him to be happy. And to be happy he may want to get a new pet a little bit after his dog gets put down. good luck.

all you can do is just be there for him in his time of need, and tell him that it's gods will to take the dog to puppy heaven, that he will miss his dog.but there is nothing that will keep him from being so upset.he will be sad for a little while, but he will get over it eventually!p.s. try getting him a new dog that always help's,i know he'll tell you that ';no other dog can replace my dog!!!';thats not true!just try these things!theyre guarenteed 2 work!!! best of luck 2 u and ur friend!!!
